Emily Pothast

“Capitalism is a pure religious cult,” wrote Walter Benjamin in 1921, “perhaps the most the most extreme the world has ever known.” In this fragment, written in response to Max Weber’s Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and published posthumously, Benjamin turns a lucid eye to the mechanisms through which capitalism exerts its cultic influence. In this slide talk, artist, writer, and lecturer Emily Pothast will probe the visual culture of the religion of capitalism, whose theology Benjamin describes as the “expansion of despair.”
