Sponsored by Seattle Clinic Defense
There is a group that protests the Madison St. location of Planned Parenthood once a month, harassing patients and contributing to the stigma of those just trying to get healthcare. When we show up as clinic defenders, with supportive smiles for patients and workers, we see a decrease in the amount of yelling and direct confrontation that happens. Our goal is to take back the political space that they have staked out and let them know that their behavior is unacceptable.
This month, after our defense we will be heading over to the University of Washington, where the far right and fascist sympathizers Patriot Prayer are holding a rally with the College Republicans starting at 1 p.m. Various student and community groups are organizing a counter-demonstration and we at Seattle Clinic Defense feel it is imperative to tell the alt-right and anti-choicers they are not welcome, no matter where they show up, and must be countered in front of our clinics and on our university campuses. Information regarding the anti-fascist organizing on campus is developing, and we will update the group as more information becomes available. Our greatest concern when organizing to counter the far-right is the safety of our clinic defenders and all others who are counter-protesting and we will have a plan for safety, and designated point people for the day. Our safety also lies with our numbers, and we will be joined by hundreds, if not thousands of Seattlites who say no to the alt-right on our campuses. ***We will be having an orientation to clinic defense at 8:45 and starting our defense at 9:00***
If you have never been to a clinic defense, please plan to come at 8:45. We will meet across the street from the clinic. (Sometimes people cluster on the side of the street that the clinic is on– generally look for pink items of clothing and pro-choice signs)
Please note: this Planned Parenthood will be open during this defense, so our tactics in blocking the anti-choicers will be centered on ensuring that we are creating a supportive presence for patients. We ask that if you have not done a clinic defense before, please arrive 15 min early for training on deescalation tactics.
